Goan Jungle Style

If you go to the Sun N` Moon Travel Agency, sit down by computer no. 3, and knock three times on the table, a rugged, hairy guy with a French accent will appear and give you an offer to go on a jungle adventure! That`s how it felt at least when we stumbled upon this guy in one of the many Internet/cash/travel agency places in Palolem. For over 20 years a couple of fellows have been arranging Canyoning trips into the Goan jungle. Canyoning involves going downstream of a river or a creek and scaling the waterfalls and other obstacles either by absailing (rappeling) or simply jumping into the pool of the waterfall.

I still don`t know how we managed to descend this vertical rock.

We felt pretty safe due to the company being mentioned in the guidebook and having a good track record, so we showed up early Friday eager to do some climbing. Of course, we forgot about Indian time... After much waiting and an hour long scenic jeep ride we finally got to the top of the river we would descend. Pictures are shamelessly stolen from the Goan Jungle Adventure Facebook page, because our guide forgot to bring the memory card to his waterproof camera. So much for professionalism, but a great example of the laid back lifestyle people here enjoy.

This is not us, but it could have been!
The Canyoning group consisted of some interesting individuals, a French couple, two (crazy) Czech guys, a British man, and a French mom. At dinner that night we learned three... interesting Czech sayings:
1: If you don`t black out you haven`t had a good night out.
2: If you don`t throw up you are not drunk enough.
3: If nobody starts a fight it is not a good wedding.

Thomas & I found this to be the equivalent of: If noone dies, it is not a good Canyoning trip.

Life in Palolem is relaxing and careless, but it is time to move on! After getting so many recommendations from Theo & Agnes (our neighbors), the Swedes, and the French couple we have decided to derail from our original plan. Tomorrow we are taking a sleeper bus east to Hampi, the barren, rock-riddled, bouldering capital of India!
