A Shortcut to Falcons

Hello everyone - just a quick note to let you guys know we have arrived in Goa and doing splendidly fine. Pictures and stories from this place will follow shortly; first I thought I'd write about our journey down, which included a day in the Doha, the capital of the arab emirate Qatar.

For starters, Qatar Airlines pretty much spoiled us rotten: Windows with dimmable glass, entertainment systems with individual joysticks, one delicious meal after the next.

We were effortlessly entertained.

Arriving in Doha we were taxied to the hotel (followed the signs towards "Limousines and (secondarily) taxis), which we had booked ahead of time and was equally luxurious. Qatar has oil money running out its ears, and Doha is just now becoming a city they can "be proud of". It's basically one giant construction yard, but some areas are already finished, like the Dubai-rivaling skyscraper-cluster skyline across the bay, and Souq Waqif, a somewhat staged but still very neat reenactment of traditional Arab markets (souqs). After a lavish breakfast buffet at the hotel, we went to the waterfront and Museum of Islamic Art, brought to you by the architect behind the Louvre pyramid. And though the exhibitions / crash courses in Islam were interesting, what stole the show was the diamonds, jewels, silver and gold, old weapons and armor. Boys will be boys.

Panoramas are a breeze on Alex's new camera.

Beware of cross(dress)ing pedestrians.

Not sure whether...

From there we went to the souq, and witnessed about fifty pillow vendors, twenty spice shops, ten falcon shops and allegedly the world's only specialized falcon veterinarian, sixty parakeet cages, hundreds of aquariums, a dozen cages of genetically color-modified chickens, a handful of potters, taxidermists, miniature ship-whittlers and backgammon board carvers, all in action!, a very unintimidating military parade, but including horses, and of course souvenir stalls amass. A pretty fun day, although Qatar does leave you with a rather bitter aftertaste. And we hope the pampering hasn't made us too picky when India sets in.

Is this OK?

Is this OK? !

Updates from Goa will come - this place is wonderful, easy going, tourist friendly and full of traveler conveniences, including an internet cafe on every corner. Now comes the time to celebrate the new year; it's certainly off to an incredible start for us. Happy new year to all our friends and family!

On the doorstep

Testing the Blogger-app while Alex finishes packing. In ten minutes we leave the Christmasy comforts of the Sobczyszyn Borg residence, and head for Oslo Gardermoen Airport.
This pack also weighed in at 14 kgs.

A Long-expected Journey

The day has finally come, tomorrow our adventure begins. After one and a half year in the making, the expedition is finally beginning. Thomas came with the train this afternoon and we stopped by the shop to buy some last minute random supplies (read: Ice cream & clothes wash detergent).

We were served our last supper: Juicy duckling with mashed beet and potatoes. No pictures were taken due the fact that we were in a hurry to begin the devouring of the duck. Afterwards we were served homemade filled buns.
And by Thorin's beard were they delicious.
Of course before any great journey lies the tedious task of packing. Now, I always put off packing to the last minute, and a four month long journey should be no exception. Nonetheless i managed to scrape together the essentials and lay them out in an organized fashion. My inventory for the next four months laid out on a bed in front of me. Made me fully realize the minimalism we will face in the time ahead. Still, it made the trip even more real, so all in all it feels pretty great!
Nice! I still have to move the stuff when I go to bed though. Didn't think that one through.
We want to pack as lightly as possible and I will try to beat Thomas' score of 14kg of luggage. I will try the famous trick and take half of the stuff and leave it at home. Even so, I think I have gotten the essentials down and I feel pretty confident about my inventory. Will I still forget to bring something that is fairly important? Probably.

To say we are excited for tomorrow could actually be the understatement of the year, but we still got a couple more days left for those so I won't call it yet. Harry Potter on the TV gave us the last tastes of a comfy life and now the last night in my own, soft, comfy bed. Tomorrow we are leaving for, wait for it... Doha, Qatar.

Can't wait!

Alex

Some mental preparations were in place for the long flights ahead of us!

We're going on an adventure!

Bilbo becomes a barrel-rider later in his adventure.

How it began

Welcome to Thomas and Alex' travel blog! We're headed out on a long journey this winter and spring, and plan on documenting it here. For those of you who don’t know, Alex and I met back in 2009/2010 when we both took a gap year of music, travelling and outdoors life at Seljord Folk High School. Our school trip took us to Nepal, but it was only a week long, and we ended up only staying in and around Kathmandu, the capital city. We found out that we needed to come back and see more of that lovely country, and thus the seed was sown for the journey about to begin. We’ve both been studying in Trondheim ever since, and now, roughly half ways in our studies, seemed like the right time to take a break. So we’ve been working and saving money, and this spring we’re both taking off school and ready to spend four months exploring Asia. It's been a long time in the planning, which justifies the Lord of the Rings-referencing title, and Bilbo's adventure in The Hobbit sure seems to spring to mind often when talking about ours. Far away lands, unfamiliar cultures, exotic creatures, beautiful places. But we hope it'll contain slightly fewer orks, dragons and near-death experiences!

Where to go

Although Nepal obviously was on the list, we hadn’t really discussed where else to go, before we sat down once this April in Alex’ apartment. We basically found a map and threw out any crazy ideas we had. It turned out our wishes overlapped pretty well, and although we had to shorten the list a little bit (we have to save something for future trips!), we ended up with the following itinerary:
  • India
  • Nepal
  • Myanmar/Burma
  • Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam
  • China, Hong Kong
  • Japan

This summer we bought plane tickets, this fall we’ve been fixing Visas and vaccinations, this Christmas has been all about packing and final preparations. It’s incredible how quickly time has gone - "Only four months left!", "Only a month left!", "Only twenty days left!", "Only a week left!!", "Only four days left!!!", which is where we are now.

This blog

So stay tuned. We'll be updating this blog regularly during our trip with posts from both of us, pictures, maybe a little competition or two. It'll probably be mostly in English, due to us both having international families.

Till next time: Merry Christmas!
